The Boatbuilding Program

We currently offer two programs – the 6-hour canoe, and the Periwinkle Jr.

The 6-hour canoe is a start-to-finish project designed to teach all aspects of boatbuilding – from lofting to finishing – and can be completed in several sessions over the course of a week. It is within the capabilities of as young as a 5th-grade group, where tool handling is done by an adult, or older students with complete lofting skills, and hand-power tool use.

The Periwinkle Jr is a classic flat-bottom planked skiff which, when the parts are pre-cut by our staff, can be assembled by our students in a week’s time. This build requires limited power and hand-tool use, and is best suited to an older team- 10th, 11th and 12th grade students.

We currently are working on roughly 4 builds per year, coordinated with school vacations. Please contact us here for more information: ted (at) smalldogboatworks.com
